Community Guidelines

Effective: August 7, 2025

Building vibrant communities means having a foundation of respect for other users and Root– that is why we prioritize shared rules, standards, and guidelines. We believe in empowering users to create meaningful relationships and accomplish real work together, and that worthwhile goal includes creating and maintaining a safe and respectful environment for everyone. Our Community Rules inform you of how to – and not to – use our platform. Everyone on Root shares the responsibility to make it a safe and supportive space.

We encourage each community to develop its own culture that is built on the foundation of these community guidelines. These community guidelines apply to all users, every community, and all interactions you have with the services (whether through the App, Website, third-party apps, or otherwise).

If you encounter content, an account, or community that is violating these community guidelines, please let us know by contacting us via our support form or by using the built-in reporting feature within the platform.

Guidelines

These rules apply to any and all user contributions and use of the Root platform, including custom apps, shared content, and community spaces. User contributions must comply with all applicable federal, state, local, and international laws and regulations. Without limiting the foregoing, User Contributions must:

  • Be Kind. All users have the right to Root free from bullying, harassment, and violence. To ensure this, we strictly prohibit:
    • Hate Speech: Content that promotes, encourages, or condones violence, discrimination, or disparagement based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
    • Extremism: This includes coordinating violent acts; glorifying or promoting violence or the perpetrators of violent acts; and promoting conspiracy theories that could encourage or incite violence against others.
    • Harassment and Bullying: Unwanted and repeated hostile behavior, including personal attacks, malicious trolling, insults, or any and all other conduct intended to degrade, intimidate, or silence another user.
  • Be Rooted in Safety. Your safety, and the safety of the community, is a top priority. Therefore, do not create, share, or promote content:
    • Promotes Illegal Activity: Content that promotes, encourages, or provides instructions for illegal activities, such as illegal drug use, weapons manufacturing, or the sale of regulated goods like firearms is prohibited.
    • Sexually Explicit Material: We do not permit pornographic or gory content.
    • Self-Harm: We do not permit content that encourages or provides instructions on how to self-harm or commit suicide.
  • Be Authentic: Root is creating, collaborating, and connecting with genuine users and communities, not for deception or manipulation. Therefore, we strictly prohibit:
    • Spam and Scams: Sending unsolicited, repetitive, or commercial messages. Do not engage in phishing, fraud, or deceptive acts to trick users into revealing information or sending money.
    • Impersonations: Impersonate any person or misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person or organization, give the impression that your contributions come from or are endorsed by us or any other person or entity, if this is not the case.
  • Honor User Privacy. Do not post or share personal or confidential information of other users without their explicit consent. This includes, but is not limited to, phone numbers, home addresses, private images, or other identifiers. Sharing this type of information is often called “doxxing” and is strictly prohibited.

Enforcement

We enforce these guidelines based on the severity and context of the violation. In all, our goal is to maintain a safe environment for everyone, while protecting our users, communities, and the integrity of the Root platform. If you violate our community guidelines, we may take one or more of the following actions:

  • Send you a warning
  • Remove content
  • Impose restrictions or loss of privileges
  • Remove you from certain communities
  • Suspend or terminate your account
  • Cooperate with law enforcement when we believe there is a genuine risk of physical harm or a threat to public safety.

If you believe your content or account was erroneously actioned, you may have the ability to appeal our decision. Please contact our support team via our support form with details of your situation, using the subject line “Appeal Community Guidelines Violation.” We endeavor to respond to your request in a timely manner.
